The short answer

Pick by climate first. Boquete (about 1,200 m) and Volcán (about 1,400 m) are cool mountain towns in Chiriquí, an hour from David’s hospitals and airport. Coronado is a hot Pacific beach town about 80–90 minutes from Panama City. Panama City is hot and humid but has the country’s top hospitals and its international airport.

Boquete: cool, green and sociable

Boquete sits at about 1,200 m, with a mean temperature of about 21 °C at its Los Naranjos weather station. It has an active English-speaking community, with markets, talks, hiking groups and volunteering. David, with its hospitals and airport, is about an hour’s drive away. Rents for one or two bedrooms run about $700–1,200 a month (Relofirm, 2026).

Volcán: cooler, quieter, cheaper

Volcán, on the far side of Volcán Barú, sits at about 1,400 m, at roughly 10–26 °C year-round. It is about an hour to David. It is more rural than Boquete, and rents start lower: about $350–700 for a modest one- or two-bedroom (Latin America MLS, May 2026).

Coronado: beach life near the capital

Coronado is a Pacific beach town with a tropical climate of about 25–29 °C, dry from December to April. It is roughly 80–90 minutes from Panama City by highway. The nearest medical centre named by retirement guides is Centro Médico San Fernando in nearby Chame. One- or two-bedroom rents run about $700–1,500 in the beach communities (Relofirm, 2026).

Panama City: hospitals and flights on the doorstep

The capital is at sea level, hot and humid, with a mean of about 27 °C and humidity around 77% through the year. In return you get major private hospitals such as Punta Pacífica and San Fernando, and the international airport. Central one- or two-bedroom rents run about $900–1,700 (Relofirm, 2026).

How to choose

Whichever you choose, Panama’s retiree permit needs a lifetime pension of at least $1,000 a month. Rent for a few months before you buy, and visit in both the dry and the wet season.

  • You want spring-like weather and an active community: Boquete.
  • You want the same climate, quieter and cheaper: Volcán.
  • You want the beach and easy trips to the capital: Coronado.
  • Specialist hospitals and international flights come first: Panama City.
